Ben Avon Station

The Lindis Lodge is located on Ben Avon Station, occupying over 6,000 acres within the Ahuriri Valley. Our neighbouring working farm, Longslip Station, runs merino sheep and Angus bulls, using Ben Avon for grazing. Be mindful of wandering stock while exploring the area!

Ben Avon Station dates back to the 1890s when the pastoral lease was obtained by aman named Hodgkinson, separating it from Longslip Station. The original Ben Avonhomestead, dating to 1883, sits on 200 acres of freehold land, while the wool shedwas established on site in the early 1870s. Hodgkinson was fortunate to sell off thestation’s stock in 1895, just before one of the harshest snowstorms to hit theMackenzie District, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of sheep. Due tothese losses, Hodgkinson was able to secure the lease at a reduced rental rate.

In 1988, Jim Morris, the former owner of Avon Station, purchased the 25,000-acre BenAvon lease. Jim maintained the station for 30 years before selling to The Lindis.During his tenure, he led a land tenure review, reducing the station’s size to 6,500acres of freehold land, with the remainder placed under the Department ofConservation. Pre-land tenure review, the station ran 7,500 merino sheep and 150Hereford cattle. Jim adopted a low-impact land-use approach to ensure the environmental balance of the property.
