The Ahuriri Valley
The Ahuriri Valley (pronounced A-hu-riri) is a dramatic landscape of rugged mountains, wetlands, tussock lands, and beech forests. Within the valley lies the expansive Ahuriri Conservation Park, covering over 49,000 hectares. Its spectacular scenery and ease of access make it a popular destination for recreation. From The Lindis, you will often see local fishermen casting for trout in the summer months, as the river is renowned as a prime fly-fishing spot.
The valley is named after the NgāiTahu chief, Tu Ahuriri. Māori used thevalley as a route to the West Coast,travelling through Canyon Creek,Hunter Valley, and Hāwea, althoughthe easier route via Lindis Pass wasoften preferred.
In the late 1800s, the Ahuriri Valley washome to three pastoral lease runs:Birchwood, Ben Avon, and Longslipstations. The Birchwood run, which wasestablished in 1873, was described asbeing “more suitable for keas thansheep.” Managed by a succession ofrunholders, it was purchased by EdgarWilliamson in 1942.
